General Workshop Safety
Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Complete Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) training and assessment before using equipment.
Sharp tools
Sharp tools are safer when sharp – report blunt tools.
Hold tool firmly
Secure material – vice, clamp, bench hook.
Cut away from body and hands.
Move slowly
Keep others away from cutting work.
Electrical equipment
Check cables and equipment and report faults.
Keep liquids away from electrical equipment.
Check surroundings and equipment before turning on.
Hot tools (Soldering Irons, Hot Glue Guns)
Use PPE as directed in SOPs.
Turn on fume extraction.
Use holders or stands for hot tools.
Hold materials with ‘third hands’ , vice or clamps.
Stand up at the workbench.
Keep electrical cable away from hot parts.
Do not touch hot parts or materials.
Place hot tools and parts carefully on the bench when not being handled.
Allow materials to cool before handling.
Report burns to the teacher for FIRST AID – (minor burns hold under cold water for 10 mins)
Fast moving tools (Drills, sanders or saws)
Use PPE as directed in SOPs.
Turn on dust extraction.
Start tool or machine without contact with material.
Hold the tool firmly with both hands.
Secure materials with vice or clamps.
Secure loose clothing or hair.
Keep electrical cables away from moving parts.
Clear the work area and keep others at a safe distance.

Do not run
Do not throw objects
Do not distract others who are using tools or equipment.
Report any injuries to the teachers.
Keep benches tidy – pack up when required.
Keep the floor clear.
Lift heavy items close to body, bending at the knees and with others if necessary.
